jobless claims which have some sandy issues involved or the fiscal cliff talks? >> definitely the fiscal cliff. what you were talking about yesterday, boehner's comments really turned things around for the markets, all this sense of optimism all of a sudden. we saw the markets go from down triple digits for the dow up to triple digits. we haven't seen a swing like that since over a year ago. it's been october of 2011 was the last time it happened. it's definitely the fiscal cliff driving things. we heard commentary from lloyd blankfein, between that and the lead story -- one of the top stories on the front page of the "wall street journal" suggesting the president is flexible on the tax hikes, that sounds like a deal might get done. you see a gain of 50 or 60 points. gdp up 2.7% from 2%. there was concerning things when you dig into the numbers, it's all fiscal cliff all the time here, chuck. >> oh, hopefully, as you guys say, it will all -- people will rise above, right, becky? >> that's right. >> i know. i see the button. up next, we're taking a deep dive into the u.s. relationship wit

to this extraordinary country that we inherited. that being said, before we talk about fiscal cliff, we are here because of the last fiscal cliff. since we had another fiscal cliff-type scenario that created the scenario and ridiculous idea that i voted against, put a bunch of things bad to happen at one time. surprise, it didn't work and we are facing this. there are two issues number one, avoid doing damage and avoid doing harm. and we need to look for a way to accomplish that in the short-term. and we have to, we have to have a conversation about getting the fiscal house in order. i heard bob talking about that. it is true. we spend $1 trillion more than we take in. it's a fact and we have to address it. i approach this issue with the following belief. the only way to get it in order is through rapid economic growth. no taxes you can raise to bring the debt down. what the president is offering is not enough but will make a dent on job creation, particularly middle-class job creation. i oppose his plan. we should do real tax reform. if there are loopholes, there is a loophole for being able to write o

in never neverland. so much for a week of work here in washington to avert what's called the fiscal cliff. treasury secretary tim geithner gave house republicans new ideas on resolving the fiscal cliff. and left with their anger ringing throughout the capitol. >> no substantive progress has been made in the talks between the white house and the house over the last two weeks. i've got to tell you, i'm disappointed. >> reporter: here are the big white house numbers. for $4 trillion deficit reduction in ten years, $1.6 trillion comes from households earning more than $250,000 a year. $400 billion in entitlement cuts in program like medicare and medicaid and $50 billion in new spending next year for inf infrastructu infrastructure. there's another idea. a permanent cease fire on raising the debt ceiling now $16 trillion that would allow it to rise automatically. republicans use the debt ceiling last year to extract spending cuts and they don't want to give up that leverage. >> there's a lot of things i've wanted in my life but almost all of them had a price tag attached to them. and if we're
